Hughes persistently pursued an opportunity to report thoroughly on Haiti in 2008, after reporting on a story of Haitian refugees who risked and, in some cases, lost their lives in a hazardous voyage headed for the coasts of Miami. Hughes was well-suited to be one of the first journalists in Port-au-Prince to document the devastation two years after the devastating 7.0 earthquake devastated the country.
Hughes has returned to Haiti more than a dozen times because of his passion for the people of Haiti and their tenacious spirits. In 2011, the Miami New Times named Calvin as Miami’s finest TV news anchor, saying that he reported the tale of Haiti’s earthquake “gracefully and professionally.” Hughes is always looking for ways to deliver viewers stories that speak to the heart of our community. Similarly, he left his anchor desk to offer live coverage of the Miami Heat’s four consecutive trips to the NBA Finals and two championships, as well as the 2nd NBA Finals.
Hughes returned to Port-au-Prince for the five-year anniversary of the disaster in 2015, and then to Havana a few weeks later, where he delivered live coverage of the historic US-Cuba diplomacy discussions. Hughes visited Havana twice that year and was the first American journalist to broadcast live from the new American Embassy before the official flag-raising ceremony.
