Hawkins started her career in broadcasting with ITN as a newsreader and reporter for LBC Radio in 1999. She was one of the first journalists on the scene of the deadly Paddington rail accident, providing live updates. Hawkins has been a co-anchor of ITV Meridian’s main news program Meridian Tonight since October 2003. She also appeared on the ITV News Channel as a presenter. Hawkins’ last performance before going on maternity leave was on January 22, 2015; she returned on June 15, 2015. Hawkins has been a newsreader on Good Morning Britain four mornings a week since 2017 and has filled in as a key presenter during vacations and absences.

Hawkins is a patron of the Motor Neuron Disease Association, one of the organizations she supports. She is a patron of Ellenor Hospice and a Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens ambassador.
