Archuleta sung in multiple episodes of the TV programme Star Search in 2003. On Star Search 2, he won the Junior Vocal Champion title but lost the Junior Grand Champion title to Tiffany Evans. He competed against Alexandréa Lushington, then 11 years old, who went on to become a “top 20” semi-finalist on “American Idol” alongside Archuleta.
Archuleta’s appearance on “Star Search” was preceded by an appearance on “The Jenny Jones Show,” where he met the finalists from the first season of “American Idol,” for whom he performed a spontaneous a cappella rendition of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from “Dreamgirls,” for which he received praise fromSoc Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson. The episode led to appearances on CBS’s “The Early Show.”

With a performance of John Mayer’s “Waiting on the World to Change” at the San Diego tryouts – held at Qualcomm Stadium at the end of July 2007 – Archuleta received his ticket to the Hollywood auditions, with judge Randy Jackson spontaneously joining in to sing the background “waiting” in the song. He was sixteen at the time of the Hollywood auditions, and he went to school while competing on American Idol for the second time.
The candidates were divided into two groups during the Top 7 results program. Syesha Mercado, Brooke White, and Kristy Lee Cook were in one of the groups. David Cook, Carly Smithson, and Jason Castro were in the other group. Archuleta was the only one who hadn’t been assigned to a group. After the groups were formed, he was proclaimed safe and asked to choose which group he thought was safe.He sang “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” “At This Moment,” and “Imagine” in the finale. Judge Simon Cowell called Archuleta the winner of the evening, and even the eventual winner, David Cook, predicted Archuleta’s victory: “I have to admit it, the child nailed it on all three songs,” Cook added.
Archuleta earned 44 percent of the votes in the end. Identical commercials starring Archuleta and fellow finalist Cook aired during the finale show, emulating the Tom Cruise moment from Risky Business in which he dances in his undies while playing an air guitar; they were promoting the game franchise Guitar Hero.
