Lavendera is known for his unique and passionate storytelling and crafting stories that have brought life to a wide array of people. He covered the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and filled some of his reports from a makeshift field hospital in a Gulf Coast airport and from the flooded streets of New Orleans.
February 2003 he covered the Space Shuttle Columbia distaster. He followed the effort to recover debris from the shuttle as well as the emotional effect the disaster had on those Texas communities.
