She was approached by Target to create a Fashion Week Instagram Diary of her experience being backstage at the New York and London Fashion Weeks in 2014 as Teen Vogue’s beauty and health director.
Welteroth broadened the magazine’s focus and was recognized for a noteworthy rise in content on politics and social justice in Teen Vogue, particularly critical coverage of the 2016 presidential election in the United States. Willow Smith was on the cover of Welteroth’s first issue as editor of Teen Vogue, with headings like “Cultural Appreciation: Real Girls, Real Beauty, Real Talk.”Rowan Blanchard and Yara Shahidi, actresses and feminists, graced the cover of the “Smart Girls” edition in December 2016. Welteroth also invited Blanchard and Shahidi to be guest editors for the first time in the publication’s history. Blanchard and Shahidi chose their favorite novel, Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, to kick off the “Teen Vogue Book Club.”
