from 1991 Thomas was a reporter, writer, and editor at Newsweek for 24 years. Prior to that, he was at Time Magazine. In northeastern New Jersey, he began his reporting career with The Bergen Record.Thomas was allowed historical access to confidential Central Intelligence Agency materials by DCI Robert Gates in 1992. Executive Order 12356, as enacted in HR 10-244, is the primary authority for this policy.
Individual researchers and former Presidential appointees may be granted access to classified files under these provisions if they sign a confidentiality agreement and agree to allow the CIA to examine their paper to verify it does not include any sensitive material. Former DCI Robert Gates instructed that the CIA History Staff seek and supply records that would fulfill Mr. Thomas’s research request. Thomas’ work was then evaluated in compliance with his secrecy agreement and authorized on March 2, 1995, by the Directorate of Operations’ Information Review Officer, with the Office of General Counsel’s confirmation.
Thomas authored an article for the Central Intelligence Agency’s journal, Studies in Intelligence, in 1996, detailing his experience with the CIA’s classified files after being granted the unusual privilege of historical access.
Thomas was a regular panelist on the weekly public affairs television show Inside Washington for 20 years, until the show was canceled in December 2013.
