Alejandro González Iárritu directed The Revenant, a 2015 American epic Revisionist Western film. The screenplay by Mark L. Smith and Alejandro Iárritu is based in part on Michael Punke’s 2002 novel of the same name, which recounts the adventures of frontiersman Hugh Glass in 1823; the novel is based on the 1915 poem The Song of Hugh Glass. Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, and Will Poulter feature in the picture.
Hugh Glass leads Captain Andrew Henry’s trappers into the present-day Dakota Territory in late 1823. While he and his half-Pawnee son, Hawk, are hunting, an Arikara war party attacks the company’s camp, hoping to reclaim their Chief’s abducted daughter, Powaqa. During the conflict, many of the trappers are slain, while the rest flee on a boat. The survivors are led by Glass on foot to Fort Kiowa since he fears that travelling downriver will expose them to danger. The crew stores the pelts on the shore after docking.

Saul vows to never attend a residential school, but his Christian parents are adamant that their firstborn son will go to paradise. When the boy passes away from his illness, they carry him away to be blessed by a priest, leaving Saul with his grandmother deep in the woods. The parents don’t show up.
