Sandoval took an interest in music at an early age. In 1986 she formed a folk music duo Going Home with Sylvia Gomez and sent a demo tape to David Roback. She performed with the band Opal in late 1980 alongside David Roback and long-time Roback collaborator Kendra Smith. Kendra then took off for a tour in the UK. At the end of the tour, her and Roback began writing together and formed the rock band Mazzy Star.
The first album She Hangs Brightly, was released in 1990. Sandoval later formed The Warm Inventions in 2000and released her first solo album Bavarian Fruit Bread in 2001. Sandoval later confirmed in an interview that Mazzy Star is still active. The group released the single “Common Burn”/”Lay Myself Down”, their first material in 15 years.
