In addition to being a certified SCUBA diver, Gates has also climbed Mt. Aconcagua in the Argentine Andes and summited Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. As part of a small SCUBA team, he worked with researchers to excavate and better understand the ancient city’s submerged harbor complex.
From 1996 to 1998, he participated in the University of Maryland’s archaeological excavations of Caesarea Maritima in Israel. Josh graduated from Boston’s Tufts University, from which he holds degrees in archaeology and drama.
In addition to his fieldwork, he has traveled to more than 100 countries and was inducted into The Explorers Club, an organization dedicated to the advancement of exploration since 1904.

From 2007 to 2012, Gates was the host of Destination Truth which premiered on June 6, 2007, on the Syfy Channel. The series premiered its second season with its best-ever telecast, delivering 1.7 million total viewers and making the show the highest-rated second season performance by a reality series on Syfy. It ended after its fifth season.
In 2008, Gates traveled to Walt Disney World in Florida to meet with Joe Rohde, Executive Designer of Walt Disney Imagineering, and presented him with a cast of the “Yeti” footprint found during a Destination Truth episode.
The cast is on display at Expedition Everest, a Himalayan-themed, high-speed, coaster-like attraction where guests come face-to-face with a Yeti.
