Richardson began his live-action acting career as a commercial actor in New York City. In an AT&T commercial, he got his first professional acting job. He was frequently employed as a voice actor for ads on television. Later, he relocated to Los Angeles. Because of his deep and powerful voice, he has mostly played villains.
He got his first voice job as Mayor Tilton in the animated television adaptation of The Mask in 1995. He also appeared in a PBS show directed by John Houseman early in his career.
He played Barney Rubble in the animated film The Flintstones: On the Rocks, which he voiced in 2001. He made history as the first Black actor to play the Joker when he voiced the character on the animated series The Batman in 2004, earning him two Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program.
He took up the role of Trigon from Keith Szarabajka on the animated series Teen Titans in 2005. He also voiced Terrador, the eldest dragon from The Legend of Spyro game series, in the comedy Clerks II, in which he portrays a cop who spots the words “Porch Monkey 4 Life” scribbled on the back of Randal Graves’ work jacket.
He frequently portrays Bill Cosby characters, such as Stewie on Family Guy (“Brian Does Hollywood”), when he is a contestant on the comedian’s Kids Say the Darndest Things; Cosby himself on The Boondocks; and Numbuh 5’s father Mr. Lincoln on Codename: Kids Next Door. Jerome, Lois’ ex-boyfriend, is his most prominent part on Family Guy.
On The Cleveland Show, he also voices Cleveland Brown Jr., Lester Krinklesac, and a variety of other characters. On American Dad!, he now plays Principal Brian Lewis.Behind the Voice Actors nominated Richardson for Voice Actor of the Year in 2012 and 2013. In the 2015 Simpsons episode “The Princess Guide,” he performed the voice of a Nigerian king.
Later, in Tyler Perry’s debut animated picture, Madea’s Tough Love, he performed the voice of Judge Michaels. He voiced Jimbo in The Boss Baby: Back in Business, a sequel to the 2017 film The Boss Baby, in 2018.
