Mitchell began his acting career in Melbourne, Australia, after aspiring to be a professional tennis player. He received his training at the Film & Television Studio International and traveled through Australia with Sudden Impact Entertainment, an international entertainment organization. He made his professional acting debut as Chris Knight in the long-running serial opera Neighbours. Mitchell then relocated to the Gold Coast after being hand-picked to play Will Benjamin in the third season of H20:Just Add Water, an internationally acclaimed children’s drama series.
Mitchell moved to Sydney in June 2009 and began starring on Home and Away as Romeo Smith. Mitchell’s portrayal of Romeo earned him the Logie Award for Most Popular New Male Talent in 2010. Mitchell revealed his decision to leave Home and Away after four years on November 4, 2012, and his character left the show in 2013. Mitchell was cast as John Young in The CW’s version of Tomorrow People in February 2013.
Mitchell joined the cast of the American television series Members Only in July 2014, as Jesse. The show, however, was canceled before the pilot episode aired. Mitchell joins Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in February 2015 as Lincoln Campbell, a charming Inhuman. In season three, he was promoted to the main cast. Mitchell was cast as Captain John “Abe” Abraham in the CBS thriller The Code in August of 2018. Dave Annable, who played the character in the pilot episode, was replaced by him. After one season, the show was cancelled. Mitchell co-stars with Michael B. Jordan in Without Remorse, a 2021 film adaptation of Tom Clancy’s 1993 novel of the same name.
