Richardson began his football career in the minor leagues. In December 1999, he made his debut for Slough Town after joining from Burnham. After a successful season with Slough, scouts from the league approached him, and in July 2000, he spent a week on trial with Cambridge United.He joined Harrow Borough for the 2000–01 season and continued to pique league clubs’ interest with appearances for Reading reserves in August 2000 and Wycombe Wanderers reserves in November 2000.

On the same day that Dave Kitson signed for Cambridge United, he finally broke into the professional ranks. He made his debut the next day, scoring a last-minute winner in a 3–2 win over Stoke City.In September 2001, he moved to Torquay United on loan.
