Zaffino interned and later worked as a weather producer at KTVX in Salt Lake City while studying meteorology at the University of Utah. He relocated to Traverse City, Michigan, in 1984 to forecast weather for WGTU, and then to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1985 to anchor the morning and evening weathercasts.
His fascination in weather stems from his desire to be outside and in nature. Also, in his German class in high school. His teacher made meteorological maps on the chalkboard there, outlining the conditions required to cause a snowstorm and send everyone home for the day. Since then, he’s been generating weather maps.
In 1985, he enthusiastically returned to the West to work as a weather anchor at KDRV in Medford, Oregon. In 1988, he was hired by KATU in Portland to provide weekend weather. In addition to environmental reporting, Zaffino refined his writing and story-telling talents for television news. He was eventually elevated to the evening newscasts after assisting with the premiere of KATU’s morning news. Matt departed KATU in 1996 to become Chief Meteorologist.
In 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2002, as well as 2006, 2008, and 2009, 2012, and 2015, the Oregon Associated Press named him Best Weathercaster. Matt received Emmy Awards for outstanding individual accomplishment in weather casting in 2000, 2015, and 2016, and has been nominated for several more Emmys. For 25+ years of excellent service in broadcasting in the Northwest, he was inducted into the renowned National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Silver Circle in 2016.
He is the only person who has ever broadcast live from the summit of Mount Hood on television. Zaffino also covered the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, as well as the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics in Utah and Vancouver for KGW. He went to the Greenland Ice Sheet in the summer of 2004 to report on climate change research, doing live radio broadcasts for KINK FM in Portland from there.
