Maya Wiley is an American professor, racial justice, and equity advocate. She is the senior vice president for Social Justice at The New School, and the Henry Cohen Professor of Urban Policy and Management at the Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment. Between 2016 and 2017, Maya chaired the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB). Prior to that Before that, she served as counsel to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Maya is experienced in both the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and the ACLU and was a former Legal Analyst for NBC News and MSNBC, where she argued against Trump’s attacks on our civil liberties and democratic norms. She was the founder and president of the Center for Social Inclusion. Maya was also Senior Advisor on Race and Poverty at the Open Society Foundations, the largest funder of human rights work the world over. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Dartmouth College and a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School.
On October 7, 2020, Wiley announced that she would run for mayor of New York in the 2021 election. By mid-January 2021, Wiley had raised over $720,000 from donors, she spent approximately $404,000 on her campaign and had about $316,000 left.
