She started teaching at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 2006 and was given tenure in 2011. She and Ashira Ostrow were co-winners of the Association of American Law Schools’ 2012 Scholarly Papers Competition with their article “Marriage as Punishment” as assistant professors.
“Marriage has played a significant role in the operation of the criminal justice system, including both as a defense to crime and as a form of punishment,” Murray writes in her study. Her paper “What’s So New About the New Illegitimacy?” was named one of the finest sexual orientation and gender identity legal review articles of 2012 by the Dukeminier Awards’ Michael Cunningham Prize.
She received the 2014 Rutter Award for Teaching Distinction as a full professor at UC Berkeley, which “honors a professor who has demonstrated an excellent dedication to teaching and who is an inspiration to students.” She was named faculty director of the Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice (CRRJ) the following year, the first law school think tank in the United States to focus on reproductive rights and justice issues.
She was also a co-author of the first reproductive rights and justice casebook, “Cases on Reproductive Rights and Justice.” Following the resignation of outgoing dean Sujit Choudhry, Murray was chosen interim dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law on March 22, 2016.
