Michael Baden is a renowned forensic pathologist and an American physician and board-certified. Baden is known for his investigation of high-profile deaths and as the host of HBO’s Autopsy. He has worked as the chief medical examiner of the City of New York from 1978-1979 he is also the chairman of the Forensic Pathology Panel of the House Select Committee on Assassinations, which investigated the killing of John F. Kennedy. The conclusions of Baden’s independent autopsy are frequently at odds with the opinions of local authorities.

Baden served as the City of New York’s chief medical examiner from 1978 to 1979 but was fired by Mayor Ed Koch after receiving complaints about his work, including memos from district attorney Robert Morgenthau and city health commissioner Reinaldo Ferrer, criticizing Baden for “sloppy record-keeping, poor judgment, and a lack of cooperation. Robert Tanenbaum, Baden’s former lawyer, defended his autopsy methods in 1979, while also admitting his lack of collaboration with the New York establishment. Baden later won a wrongful termination lawsuit for $100,000.
He was appointed as a deputy medical examiner for Suffolk County after that, but he was fired for reportedly making inappropriate remarks on how to perform the ideal murder. He was quoted in Oui Magazine as outlining how to get away with “high tech murder,” although Baden rejected the claim. The decision to fire him has reversed shortly after because the facts surrounding his claimed remarks were unclear, but Baden elected to leave the job anyhow.
He works as a forensic pathologist consultant in his spare time. On a number of other high-profile cases and investigations, he has served as a consulting or lead pathologist, as well as an expert witness. He was called to testify at a hearing.
