Greger attended Cornell University School of Agriculture, where as a junior, he launched an unofficial webpage regarding the hazards of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease. In the same year, he was employed by Farm Sanctuary near Cornell to work on mad cow concerns, and after viewing a stockyard as part of his work with Farm Sanctuary, he became a vegan.
When cattle producers unsuccessfully sued Oprah Winfrey for libel over claims she made regarding the safety of beef in 1996, he appeared as an expert witness in 1998, testifying about bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
He enrolled in Tufts University School of Medicine’s MD/PhD program, but then dropped out to pursue simply the medical degree. He earned his doctorate in general practice with a focus on clinical nutrition in 1999.
In 2001, he joined the Organic Consumers Association to work on mad cow issues, and as cases of the disease began to occur in the United States and Canada, he became known as “The Plague of the Twenty-First Century.”
He started a website and wrote a book in 2004 criticizing the Atkins Diet and other low-carb regimens. Greger was a founding member of the American College Of Lifestyle Medicine, which was founded at Loma Linda in 2004. He was one of the first hundred people to join the institution.
He joined the Humane Society’s farm animal welfare division as director of public health and animal agriculture in 2005. After the Humane Society released an undercover video of the Westland Meat Packing Company showing downer animals entering the meat supply, the USDA was forced to recall 143 million pounds of beef, some of which had been routed into the nation’s school lunch program, he testified before Congress in 2008.
Greger strives to persuade people to switch from a Western-style diet to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which he claims will prevent and reverse many chronic diseases, in his lectures, videos, and books on nutrition.
He has chastised some other doctors for failing to encourage their patients to adopt plant-based diets and avoid animal-based products: 1–12, and he has chastised the USDA, claiming that “a conflict of interest right in their mission statement” protects food producers’ economic interests over clear dietary guidelines.
