She’s covered a lot of difficult stories in her journalism career, but nothing like the COVID-19 pandemic. She spent several years reporting in cities across the country, exposing herself to nearly every type of weather and learning the cultural nuances of each locale. Before coming to KPTV, Hurwitz most recently spent time reporting in Grand Rapids, Michigan where she was nominated “Best News Reporter” by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters for her investigative reporting on an African-American man who died in the back of a Kalamazoo Police Department cruiser and how officers’ incompetence may have played a role in his death.

Her story about a young vigilante who pretended to be an underage teen online to attract possible sexual predators then met them in person and filmed their encounters received the same award. Several arrests were made in West Michigan as a result of the video confrontations. She was one of the first reporters on the site of the Umpqua Community College shooting in Eugene, Oregon, presenting wall-to-wall live broadcasts.

She covered everything from political tension in the weeks building up to Oregon’s governor’s historic resignation, to various breaking news scenarios like as the enormous fire that destroyed historic Civic Stadium, a mill fire that left hundreds without jobs, and more using sources for leads.
