Mitchell began his acting career in Melbourne, Australia, after aspiring to be a professional tennis player. He received his training at the Film & Television Studio International and traveled through Australia with Sudden Impact Entertainment, an international entertainment organization. He made his professional acting debut as Chris Knight in the long-running serial opera Neighbours. Mitchell then relocated to the Gold Coast after being hand-picked to play Will Benjamin in the third season of H20:Just Add Water, an internationally acclaimed children’s drama series.

Mitchell moved to Sydney in June 2009 and began starring on Home and Away as Romeo Smith. Mitchell’s portrayal of Romeo earned him the Logie Award for Most Popular New Male Talent in 2010.
