Naomi has never competed on the ITF Junior Circuit, the world’s premier junior tour, and has only competed in a few junior tournaments at any age level. Instead, she went straight to the ITF Women’s Circuit, where she played her first qualifying match on her 14th birthday in October 2011. In March, she made her professional main draw debut in doubles with her sister Mari at her next tournament. Meanwhile, it took her until July, in her seventh attempt, to qualify for her maiden singles main draw. Her finest performance of the 2012 season came in the semifinals of the ITF $10K event in Amelia Island, where she lost to her sister.
She started her professional career in September 2013, just before her 16th birthday. She beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Caroline Garcia, and Ons Jabeur in straight sets before beating Garbie Muguruza in three sets in the fourth round, despite facing match points in the third set. She went on to win her second Australian Open championship by defeating Hsieh Su-wei in the quarterfinals, Serena Williams in the semifinals, and 22nd seed Jennifer Brady in the final. Along with Roger Federer and Monica Seles, she became one of only three players in the Open Era to win her first four Grand Slam finals.
During the opening ceremony, Naomi lighted the Olympic cauldron. She was ranked second in the world heading into the Tokyo Olympics. After two straight-set triumphs, she was defeated 6-1, 6-4 by eventual finalist and silver medalist Marketa Vondrousova in the third round of the games.
